Katarzyna Domańska

The artist practises hyperrealism – her “smooth” and big oil paintings are similar to enlarged photos. Amusingly, they refer to postcards or photo wallpaper but do not cross the border of kitsch. They say about an affirmation of life and its elusive beauty: about the sunshine reflecting in the ocean bed, the sparkling light eliciting intensive colours of climbing plant leaves are all elusive.

The details are given a big format, which shows, just like a microscope, delicate structures of the “fleshy” interior of flowers and the vitality of juice-busting stems. At the same time the shine and colours seem more intensive than in the reality – they can make us think of a garden in paradise. Sensual impressions are also depicted, such as heat, smells, and humidity. In spite of a noticeable classical reference to Claude Monet and an American painter, Georgia O’Keefe, Domańska’s works are truly unique. They combine joy and contemplation.
